I’ve always been an avid gamer and to that end have drawn more than my fair share of characters and concepts for video games. When a long-lost relative heard through the grapevine that I had an interest in concept design, he contacted me and wanted to know if I’d have any interest in designing for an indi’ title he’d started working on–I said yes. Based on his framework thus far, I formed this creative proposal to start the conversations about style, character, and design. We discussed a desire to have the game visually cue back to the 90’s-style scrollers we’d grown up with. From there I opted to begin with a style derivative of one of my favorite franchises: Street Fighter, which I felt was both iconic and somewhat forgotten. From there, I set to creating a distilled version of each of the four basic species and tried to designate a palette for each that was distinct. I also have to admit to having a lot of fun getting to draw the illustrations.
