I believe a rite of passage in Seattle is that at some point you have to work in the coffee business. My first job in the “Emerald City” was at Firehouse Coffee where I often found myself spending quiet closing shifts doodling between chores. I began to tinker with the idea of re-branding the shop and eventually came up with this design that, I felt, was both a recognizable adaptation of the existing brand, as well as a much warranted update. Working for a business gives you a unique insight into its culture that contracted designers seldom have. I tried to embed a part of that Ballard edge in this design while keeping it professional and modern. Some portions, including the menus, were eventually used by the company.
– as a side note, all of the latté art is my own and despite having left the barista biz, I’m still kinda proud of it.
